About

The GESA Doctoral Network is a community of PhD students working on Environment and Society related research at the University of Edinburgh.

Our network is unique in that it brings together research students from a number of different disciplines and schools across the university, creating informal opportunities for networking, sharing of ideas and expertise and for building peer-support communities.ties.

What does the network do?

The primary activity of the network is a student-led research/discussion group that takes place over pizza and drinks. We meet around once a month (usually on a Friday afternoon).

At the meetings one PhD student is asked to deliver a very short summary presentation of their research (around 10 minutes). After the presentation other students ask questions, discuss issues that have arisen and debate controversial ideas or propositions. Discussion is self-facilitated and is greatly aided by preparatory reading of papers/articles which are shared on the website.

All of our meetings are arranged by the students themselves and are designed to be informative, yet friendly and informal. Pizza and drinks are provided for all attendees.

Conferences and research days

While the main activity is a monthly student research-discussion group, in the past we have also arranged postgraduate conferences for students working in the environment sector, and have organised research days. We are always open to ideas for other activities.

Supporting Masters students

Many of the doctoral students also support the work of the GESA Masters Network by acting as Reading group Facilitators, or by being Event Assistants at our more formal Academy events.
